Been wanting to write a report for long. But decided to make this a blab-entry.

April 26 2009. Morning came. Twelve TidyCity members woke up from their Sunday beds looking longingly at the cots they left behind. But what waited for them was a much bigger haven so with no qualms, our heroes and some gorgeous heroines (ahem) left their houses.

Sharp on time – there was noone but the bus. Late on time, there were a few latecomers waiting for the more late. ‘The late and the later’ joined together at last to start that wonderful trip. Bindu, WWF worker Mr Sivakumar and family joined us on the way.

Bus journey to the forest was not quite active. Unlike normal people, TidyCityers were most active at the end of the day – so our return trip was Lord-love-a-duck!

But the to-journey was limited to Anil’s Ray-Ban sunglasses, Sreenath’s KF jokes, Cris’s amazing camera skill exhibition and a 7-month old darling’s stunts J. This little bundle of joy continued to be the major highlight of our trip all the while.

We reached a small eat-out our guide and tutor Sivakumar Sir took us to. We all had coffee and tea – I think. I am confused – we ate too many times.

From there we packed off to reach our beloved most-awaited forest. Now as I see the photos taken, I am surprised that I took it in like just another place. What a wonderful place to be in… just walking there or sitting there doing nothing for hours is enough to fill a whole life of experiences. But then I cant tell it in words – how it felt – like I told in the end when giving feedback. You had to be there to know what it felt like – no one can tell it to you.

For me, I cant decide what I loved most – was it all that green that covered you from all sides – or the streams that kept flowing touching my legs on its way, – or all those bird chirps and leaf rustles you get accustomed to in a matter of minutes – just like you got used to living in the midst of car horns and bus brakes all day long in cities. Only difference is you get to come in touch with a 5-letter word all those car horns and brakes deprive you of: p-e-a-c-e.

Walking is something I am acknowledged to be an expert of. And natural settings have always been an area of comfort. But I ended up the slowest to move across all those wet rocks and slippery stones. That was lame. I grudgingly admit at this point that I wish I had legs like Aneesh or Anil, both of whom seemed to fly as they took each big rock one step at a time. One day, I am telling you, one day I am going to beat them at a rock climbing expedition. Without bribing.

But I am someone who gets fascinated by anything that remotely brings an aura of forest or any natural setup for that matter. So a whole jungle full of green leaves, pebbles, streams over rocks is more than what I could ask for in 10 lives! The best part in such trips is sitting there doing nothing. We got to do that too with Mr Sivakumar’s help. We meditated! Yes believe it or not – we the bunch of hooligans that we looked like – sat in the midst of that heaven, listening to the birds, the breeze, the waters and our breathing – thoughts of what-nots crossing our mind – “a connection” in Jay’s words forming within us. This is where we came from. This was us. The real us.

I will not try to explain how it all went. But I am sure none of us are going to forget the time we spent head to toe dipped in pure water – the purest we could get according to Mr Sivakumar- that flowed across the rocks. We splashed water at each other, we sang songs together, played water games and went as low as possible in terms of age, and all that was considered “dignified”.

The ‘An’ brothers (that’s what I am calling Aneesh and Anil from now – An bro 1 and 2) seemed the most active of all. They had rocked on a swinging twig on the way – which I secretly plan to pursue on a future secret trip. They kept leading the way and Anil specialized in making the loudest noises. I am sure he has a name for it. He later produced it when we played Anthakshari though he claims it was singing.

Anil’s Ray-Ban in the meanwhile became a hero as every member of the team took turns wearing it, and getting every small fragment wet. But the hero managed to live till eod.

Lunch came. It was great but some of us had the misfortune of confusing a mulaku (chilly) for a bigger grain of rice and having our eyes filled and throats burned. Sniff. Post-lunch, we sat around and talked about TidyCity future plans and discussed bringing a song in.

Next venue after a lot of confusion was decided to be the golden valley. Nothing much about it but then again it was another piece of heaven that fell on earth, when you compare it with the rush-n-hush cities we come from. We sat on some steps in front of “the valley” and talked about TidyCity. Mr Sivakumar told us about other trips he has had and about how our group could do more.

Final stop after having coffee and settling bills was a ‘Thooku Palam’ (Hanging Bridge) which should be named Thoongiya paalam – because it was in no condition to be used. Or so someone said. It still looked lovely in that setting – stretching lazily over a stream that flowed in no haste or hurry. We took our places in rocks and talked about our experience in forest. I couldn’t express it since like I still feel, words are simply not enough to tell your thoughts all the time. This was one such time, at least for me it was.

This was when we had our second leech attack. An brother 1 killed a leach. The first attack was when Jay brother killed a leech.

Feedback done, we were on our way back. The trip was entirely loud and cheerful! Enthusiast-award of the day undoubtedly went to Anil. I had no idea he was so talented in the art of creative-noise-making. But really, its when we have people like that, that such trips become more alive. Singing and brawling filled the bus.

Mr Sivakumar told us that we were a good group – we didn’t buy extra plastic bottles for one! And he said he went on a semi-educational line since we were bound to see things for ourselves and learn ‘em. And then about the total absence of animals, he said thats what happened when bigger troops turned up. Visibility problem, I think its called?

Take-back-home from the trip is a Kings’s wand that An brother 1 found somewhere. Seeing that Mr Sivakumar told us “When you leave forests, you should leave nothing but footprints behind you and take nothing but memories”.

Well said.

Another Sunday and another clean up. We made a second go at museum today. This time, we literally became an international association!! Merle who joined us hails from US and shes been the most punctual of us all!

Progress: museum premises were amazingly cleaner than how we found it four weeks ago, for our first clean up. I don’t know if it was a result of our work or if something else is going on. Anyhow, it was a pleasure to see it.

We used more placards this time. Aravind brought professional placards, and people stopped to read it and ask us about it. This time a few showed interest to join the campaign. I wouldn’t say it’s a remarkable leap but it was still a step forward and any change at all is encouraging.

Merle had also brought a friend with her – Rakhi. Shes promised to spread this further. Hopefully we can start our campaign in different parts of India, this week! I will update about this, once I have more information.

Ashith and Anju were two other new volunteers while Meenakshi brought 3 more with her.

Ajai, another new member came with a number of black trash bags for all of us!

The main trouble as usual was in finding space in the limited number of trash cans they had there. We squeezed in as much as we could.

Post clean-up discussions were as fruitful as always. We had a round of cool drinks/ coffee at the Museum canteen

Bringing in more trash cans and arranging a proper disposal system in as many locations as we can is our next big challenge. Hope we overcome it soon enough

– by Sreenath N

Yesterday (Wednesday), Dr. Swapin and I had a meeting with the Kanakakunnu Palace authorities. The 2 of us met at the palace entrance at 12.00 PM. Earlier in the morning, Cris had called the palace office and obtained permission for our visit.

We were not the only ones who had come to meet the Superintendent. A group of students from Lourdes Matha Engineering College had arrived before us and they were let in first. While we waited for the students to finish, we enjoyed the grandeur of the palace.

We happened to overhear some part of the conversation the students were having with the Superintendent. They had come to book the palace grounds for their college function. The Superintendent was explaining the do’s and don’ts to them. He was particularly stressing on the trash disposal system. Previously, it seems, some college students, had not cleaned up the premises as promised and the authorities had to employ other people to do that. Incidentally, we, from TidyCity had our Kanakakunnu clean up on that very day…

“Look, it even came in the papers…Kanakakunnu officers and Superintendent must reply for the garbage heaps that are piling up in the Palace grounds”, the Superintendent quoted from a newspaper. He told them that the corporation should be paid an amount of Rs 500 for trash clearance during such events. He said that he would not allow any food stalls – citing that paper napkins will make a large portion of the trash they leave behind, if he did. He winded up their conversation and gave them the details of the amount to be paid for booking the auditorium.

We were called in next. Dr. Swapin introduced TidyCity to the Superintendent. As soon as he mentioned the Right to Information petition we took with us, the Superintendent called back the college students.

“Did I not tell you that these are serious things….See this…These people have come up with an RTI. Well, we will have to revise the rates that I mentioned earlier. You will have to pay the full caution deposit, and only then, you can book this place for your function….”, he said.

The students had no choice but to agree. Before they left, I just gave a small outline about TidyCity and collected the phone number from one of them. I told that we will contact them in two days time.

Dr. Swapin had brought the printouts of the online edition of The Hindu Metro Plus that featured our Veli clean up. He also had with him, a few printouts with some details about TidyCity and the Right to Information petition. He handed these to the Superintendent.

The Superintendent glanced through all these and then read the petition, taking time. Settling down, he started talking. Few excerpts from his talk are as follows:

“The palace grounds cover an area of 33.5 acres. There are three entrances and the whole area is patrolled by just 4 security guards. Entry into the premises is not restricted during any time of the day.

Majority of the people who visit this place, carry food items and plastic bottles with them. The authorities usually warn these people whenever they see them littering, but they would not be able to cover the entire area. The only help they get is from the Tourism Police, who pay occasional visits. These visits prove quite effective.”

To our query about the palace not having any waste bins, he replied that the usual practice is to collect all the trash and burn it. During functions, the ground is given for rent on the condition that all trash would be cleared by the organizers.

Trash collection is usually taken care of by Kudumbashree units and the collected trash is taken away by the corporation. But this system is not followed here as the corporation has to be paid an amount of Rs.500 each time.

A ban on plastic would be nice but would be hard to enforce, as it would require at least one security guard at the gate, solely for this purpose.

Our petition had two questions. The first one was whether we are allowed to install waste bins. The second one was on whom to be contacted regarding the same.

The Superintendent said that we were welcome to install our bins in the palace grounds. He said that if we can supply our boards or signs, he would happily display them.

He asked us to contact Mr. P G Sivan, Deputy Director of the Department of Public Information as he is the one who should be officially accepting the petition.

He also asked us to get in touch with Mr. K A Aurangazeb, Additional Director of Hospitality, for further guidance.

The Superintendent then made a call to Mr. P G Sivan and told him about our petition. “The questions they have asked are simple ones, but what they have written above that (our details including our last week’s clean up), will definitely give you a shock”, he told the Deputy Director.

Before we took our leave, he extended his complete support for our activities. He asked us whether we could come and talk to the students during the next few weekends, when college functions would be held there.

Our next destination was the Department of Public Information, located opposite to the Museum. The receptionist there directed us towards Mr Sivan. We handed over the petition to him. Dr.Swapin briefed him about our activities and on why we were there.

After reading the petition, the Deputy Director asked us how many bins were we planning to install and how big those bins were. We replied that we have not designed any bins as such and that we were enquiring about how we could be of help to keep the palace grounds clean. He also asked us how we are planning to get the bins emptied.

Dr.Swapin stressed on the point that we are not aiming to clean up a whole city, but to spread awareness among people against littering.

The Deputy Director was of the opinion that we could have just taken permission from the Superintendent regarding the installation of bins and that there really was no need of the petition. But he assured us that the petition would be followed up in the right procedure.

–Cris

Third week pulled off great. The number was 9, lesser than last time but that didn’t matter. We have new people coming to join us every week and with the Metro Plus article TidyCity is really getting popular! This is how today turned up -

I will skip the details of how and when we all met – lets say 8 of us were there to start our Sunday work. One of us – Siva – was there an hour early! The venue was Kanakakunnu, the premises outside of the Nishagandhi auditorium where the GEC college fest was happening. We decided not to go in there and disturb them. So our activities were aimed at the people* outside (people because this is an awareness campaign and we needed people to spread the awareness to!)

We didn’t have any difficulty looking for littered trash! The place was full of it! Photographs should be coming soon! As usual we went around with our trash bags and started picking trash. Placards were read, again as usual. This time I pinned an extra paper on Sreenath’s shirt which said “You can join us too. Visit tidycity.org”. that must have been quite inviting. We had a few coming and asking us about it.

Few remembered us from the Metro Plus article. Sreenath said someone actually joined in trash picking for a short while, after enquiring. That was one big dream come true! People recognizing the message we are trying to send across and joining us in our endeavor!

Our trash bags were soon full and we had a new problem. No trash cans to dump them! We searched the whole place before asking the security staff there. They told us that there were unfortunately no trash cans and what they did was burn all the trash they collect – everything including plastic! Cant we change the system? Can we bring trash cans in there? We have to talk to the officer there before proceeding – he will be available on Wednesdays.

A fellow talked enthusiastically about how they have a strict garbage disposal system in Sikkim and how we could contact the Sikkim Government and urge the implementation of the same in Kerala. After having a good chat with all of them (partly on account of the Metro Plus recogntion again!), in which they fully sympathized with our cause and helped us with their big trash bags, we thought of other plans. One was to keep the trash bags outside the gate so the corporation folks would come and get it. But that didn’t fit into our objective.

So we went to the museum (the nearest campus with trash cans) and got permission from the curator (over phone) to use their cans. (Even this proved hard because the security guard tried to dissuade the curator saying “they have brought a huge trash packet” – here I pleaded “Brother please, we have no place to dump it – let us use just one can”. Not his fault really, they have got restrictions on the maximum amount of trash that can be cleared from the bins).

By then Srijith had also joined us and we were 9 in number.
We had a short post-discussion in which many useful points came out. The mailing list will be loaded this week too I expect .

While heated talks were going on, we still had our placards hanging on us, so an older gentleman came to us and appreciated us many times about our endeavor. We felt ever so pleased and thanked him. When older folks take an interest and take the trouble to come and clap our shoulders, it somehow equals a lot of recognition and applause.

Hope our actions will bring out the right message and there will be more coming to join us to work towards making our world a better place. If the whole world is on this side, the rest of the world has got no other choice but to remain neat and tidy!

Anila, Aravind, Bindu, Cris, Srijith and I got inside the gate by 3:30pm. A little later, Sreenath joined us. We had embellished ourselves with the TIDYCITY badges[I assume that's how Aravind found us in the first place!] We got ready to start the procedure by applying Odomos, wearing gloves and distributing the sacks.

The lawns and the sand were almost clean. In my opinion, Veli was comparitively cleaner than the dirty museum premises. Most of the litter was near the food vendors and the deserted construction areas. The waste bins, although very aesthetically made, was rather useless since most people wouldn’t understand that it is, in fact, a waste-bin.

There were people from the public who enquired about our activities. We dumped the waste that was collected from the premises into the misleadingly-shaped waste-bins each time the sacks got full. We used gloves and tongs this time, which made the work easier. But the gloves needed to be removed and worn in intervals since our hands were perspiring like anything inside them. The plastic covers which we used last time, though messy, were better compared to gloves because of this one drawback.

By 4:30, we completed a great deal of the cleaning process by cleaning up to the park area. We needed some rest since there has been a lot of waste to collect and a lot of area to cover for 7 people. While we were taking rest, we discussed the next steps to take and the feedback from today’s work. Cris noted down everything that we were discussing. The discussion ended with some good suggestions for our next day’s activities, and Bindu had to go, as we had almost finished our day’s work. But soon, Anoop, Hari and Joshua joined us. They were in full vigor to contribute their share to TIDYCITY’s tidying efforts of the day!

The 9 of us dispersed inside the park area, which was apparently the dirtiest place inside Veli. There were ice-cream cups and covers and sticks everywhere. It needed some serious cleaning. There was a small hill which was covered with soft-drink bottles and ice-cream covers and cups. We cleaned up the whole mess while people were watching.

The beach area was the ugliest! It was pointless cleaning it up. We picked up the ice-cream covers and the big pieces of paper ad plastic waste. But what are we supposed to do about small bits of paper and wrappers that, sort of, covered the whole sand layer? Like Sreenath said, this place couldn’t be cleaned even if you used a strainer!

I don’t know much about the shopkeepers’ opinions on this. Srijith can definitely throw some light on that, so find it out in his post. All I know is that, they were unaware of the fact that plastic shouldn’t be burned and that it creates toxic matter that pollutes air when burned. But I still don’t think that they have any other solution to avoid burning plastic material or that they’ll stop burning it from today onwards. Nevertheless, the message has been spread to them, and we’ll keep doing that.

So we’ve said the magic words again today and are just waiting for the magic to begin.

Technically I am bed ridden
But too much of bed riddance can do no good they say. So here I am.

The day didn’t start well for me, having this irritating cold. But I was all set to go by half past 1. Anila and I reached there close to 3. Srijith and Vids were already there. So there were 4 of us. A surprise visitor was Aravind, who tried to join us last time too but couldn’t. So now we had 5. A call from Bindu said she reached there an hour before the time she said she’d come. 6 was a good number to start. So start we did!

As soon as we began, Sreenath popped up from somewhere. Permission-getting was not an issue cause no one seemed to mind. We went to the office and asked what they usually did with the trash. They said they burnt it! Everything including plastic! This put us in standstill – were we to proceed knowing that the trash we dumped into the bins would be burnt later as well? Yes, we decided. Our intention was to pass a message, that this is what you should be doing, trash cans for trash – not public place. Hope the message was well-passed!

This time too I was mistaken to be a sales woman, picking all kinds of funny things out and distributing to the group around me! Not to mention my announcements doubling the effect. “Gloves gloves everyone”.

Three of us had placards hanging around our necks. Everyone wore id-tags of tidycity – neatly made by Vids. People stopped to read our placards and watch curiously. Some came to dump their trash into our trash bags – by the way we used these big plastic sacks (called chaaku in Malayalam) so we could reuse it next time. A few others came to ask us about it. Tourists came and told me we were doing a great job. But they said they couldn’t join us “because we are tourists. We are from Gujarat”. Hmmm I know I should have told them our group didn’t restrict membership to any city and it was meant to be an international cause. But I didn’t feel like asking them to stop sightseeing and pick up trash. Did I do right or wrong – confused!

Picking and sweating, dumping and getting tanned, we stopped to take a break by 4:30. We finished one round and decided to sit and talk about our activities. We wondered if what we are doing now was effective. Many suggestions were poured in (will include a different post for that). We decided that we were too tired for the day and my stinking cold got stinkier.

Bindu left. But three more were coming. By 5, we had Hari, Anoop and Joju there. So we decided to do a second round of trash pick-up this time covering the beach. Anoop must have become the winner of maximum trash picked – self declared winner after self-announcement that this was a competition. I was panting like a dog and Anila was “flat”. We finished close to 6. Dumping all our trash in the two bins we found was hard work. Detols came out and in a few minutes we were all “tidy”.

I reached home with a fully grown fever on me

The response was not as huge as we’d have hoped; neither did we get a new volunteer to join us, seeing our actions. But the important thing was that we were doing something and people were watching it. We could only hope that by all this, the message that we wanted to drive in was driven in, or will drive in, in future. That everyone can and had to be in this, to make a difference.

So its finally over. Here’s a summary of the event.

I reached the museum front gate close to 4 pm and Srijith joined me next, with hand covers. As we waited for the others, I took out the tidycity tags that were to be pinned on by every volunteer. Tarun, Dipu and Dilip came from different directions. Nithin, Bindu, Vishnu, Manu and Ashely were next.

By then I took the placards out and this caught the attention of the guard. He called us and asked us to get permission from an officer before carrying on with any program. So we went and talked to the officer. He was friendly and quite accepted our initiative. I was actually afraid if he might just throw us out right away. Fortunately we remained ‘unthrown’ and got his written permission.

By the time I came back there were more people. Vids came with more dustpans. Manu, Meenu had also come. There were about 13 of us then. More joined us later. We were ready to start. We divided into 3 groups. Each group was given a trash bag, a placard, dust pans, gloves.

I had a talk with Anil Sir who turned up to cover the event. By the time I turned back, I was surprised to see that the groups had already started picking up trash. There was no hesitation, no worries. It was more than enough to inspire you to join.

We moved in different directions collecting all sorts of trash including paper, plastic and glass. There were newspapers, plastic covers, ice-cream covers and sticks, tickets, broken glass and what not. We even found a receipt of a cash deposit of good amount. The trash bags that we carried soon started filling up and we found a garbage bin to dump it each time.

Our primary objective was to reach out to people and spread a message. Few people did come to ask us what we were doing. Few took interest but no one seemed too eager to join us. It was up to us to show this was not a one day thing to be forgotten about later.

It was interesting to notice that a few children actually came to help us. They enthusiastically picked up trash and came running to us to dump it. A few of the older folks came to us to throw the cola cans or food packets they were done with – well at least that was a start. It would have gone straight to the ground otherwise.

Many actually looked at us curiously but chose not to come and enquire about it. But we were not discouraged. Everyone who turned up said that they enjoyed the day and would definitely join the next time too. That will be next Sunday. The venue is not decided. There has to be a meeting to discuss the actions to be taken. The blog will be updated with all the plans. To take part in the discussions please join the mailing list by subscribing here (right side bar).

Pictures were taken. It will be posted soon.

If you ask me, I will say that when you are out there and doing these things, you get this feeling of actually doing what you want to see happen around you. That’s one feeling that is worth all the effort.

Thanks to each and everyone who came to join the cause and gave us all the support Special thanks to Tarun for running around taking pictures and trash-picking at the same time!

About getting more trash bins in the city – I have been trying to make some phone calls and sending emails, none getting any response so far. But I didnt follow up on the calls. I was plain scared, to be honest.

And today I get a bit of free time after work. So I finally gathered enough guts and called up the corporation office. A friend had given this link -http://www.corporationoftrivandrum.in/grievance.htm

I had no idea whom to contact so I asked for the Corporation Engineer. He was not there and so the next designation I remembered was Council Secretary. I was feeling ice cold when I asked her how I can get more trash bins in the city. She asked “What?”. But she didnt yell at me. I asked again, this time adding “Who should I approach for this?” and she directed me to the Health Officer.

He didnt answer the phone yet. But I feel good enough to have taken the first step. I dont know if anything would come out of this but I have huge hopes. And there is no point in me telling do this, do that, when I am not ready to do so much as try to find out what could be done.

Will update on what happens after the next call. If anyone has a clear idea on whom to contact for this, please do let me know! Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit video Gummo buy
