Reduce, Reuse and Recycle
If you are worried about the piles of waste that rot on our roads, about the corporation that you think doesn’t know its job; about corrupt politicians who you think swindle public money, about the whole system that in your opinion, doesn’t work, and if you think your job ends there, please skip the rest.
On the other hand, if you want to do something about it, here are a few shockingly simple things you can do, which can go a long way.
Reduce – Reduce the use of materials that can end up as difficult-to-manage waste
- Avoid takeaway food as much as you can, if you do, do it from a place where as little plastic is used for packaging as possible.
- Buy cotton clothes instead of synthetic/semi-synthetic clothes
- While shopping, buy stuff with as less plastic packaging as possible.
- Again, while going shopping, take your own shopping bag along.
- Never, never waste food.
- While arranging parties – go for paper/ceramic cups, plates. Never go for plastic or other synthetic stuff.
- When going on a trip, carry your own water bottle (plastic or otherwise). Take a look near our railway tracks and you’ll know why I say this.
- When buying soft drinks, buy them in cans instead of plastic bottles.

- Re-use plastic bags, do not just throw them away after a single use. Wear them out by use.
- Reuse one-sided paper for your rough scribblings
- Use fountain pens instead of ball-pens. If you do use them, make sure you get them refilled – do not just throw away used pens.
- Give away your old usable clothes to charity
- Sell away unusable clothes, glass, paper to recycling shops

- Disposing plastic should be your last option, and when you do, make sure you dispose it properly, understand where it’s going, make sure it gets recycled if it is recyclable. The fundamental thing here is segregation of plastic.
- Segregate the degradable from non-degradable waste at source. Do not just dump all your waste on the people who come to collect them – remember they are also people like us who would not really enjoy digging through someone else’s garbage.
- If you have the space, dispose organic waste in your own yard in a compost – rather than burdening the corporation/municipality services. Actually it doesn’t take that much space;here’s a good link on how you can go about composting.
- If you live in a flat, talk to your association to get a compost unit built.

Kerala is a big trash bin!

While I was traveling from Trivandrum to Bangalore couple of days back (5th March 2009), I was so saddened by the sight of all kinds of trash, thrown all over the places that the train passed. The passengers in trains seem to think the railway track and the places around it, a big trash bin. Thousands of travelers use trains to reach their destinations everyday and all these people are throwing all kinds of wastes including food containers, plastic covers, tea and coffee cups ( paper?), and paper plates outside the train. They are not at all bothered about throwing these outside through the windows.
I always collect my left overs and food containers and bring them home. Even the so called high society people traveling in the a/c compartments are throwing their left overs out of the train as if they are entitled to use the entire state of Kerala for their waste disposal.
When the train was approaching the Paravoor station near Kollam, some fire sparks fell inside my compartment. Such sparks are enough to cause a big explosion inside the train. The sparks were actually the result of burning trash somewhere outside on the roads!
What we can do to stop all this I wonder!!

The Pollution Control Board
The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Is a statutory organisation (Constituted by a statute or law), was constituted in September, 1974 under the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974. Further, CPCB was entrusted with the powers and functions under the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981.
It serves as a field formation and also provides technical services to the Ministry of Environment and Forests of the provisions of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986.
Principal Functions of the CPCB, are described in the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974, and the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981, are

to promote cleanliness of streams and wells in different areas of the States by prevention, control and abatement of water pollution.

to improve the quality of air and to prevent, control or abate air pollution in the country.

Advise the Central Government on any matter concerning prevention and control of water and air pollution and improvement of the quality of air.

Plan and cause to be executed a nation-wide programme for the prevention, control or abatement of water and air pollution;

Co-ordinate the activities of the State Board and resolve disputes among them;

Provide technical assistance and guidance to the State Boards, carry out and sponsor investigation and research relating to problems of water and air pollution, and for their prevention, control or abatement;

Plan and organise training of persons engaged in programme on the prevention, control or abatement of water and air pollution;

Lay down, modify or annul, in consultation with the State Governments concerned, the standards for stream or well, and lay down standards for the quality of air; and

Perform such other function as may be prescribed by the Government of india.

Advise the Governments of Union Territories with respect to the suitability of any premises or location for carrying on any industry which is likely to pollute a stream or well or cause air pollutions; Lay down standards for treatment of sewage and trade effluents and for emissions from automobiles, industrial plants, and any other polluting source; Evolve efficient methods for disposal of sewage and trade effluents on land; develop reliable and economically viable methods of treatment of sewage, trade effluent and air pollution control equipment; Identify any area or areas within Union Territories as air pollution control area or areas to be notified under the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981; Assess the quality of ambient water and air, and inspect wastewater treatment installations, air pollution control equipment, industrial plants or manufacturing process to evaluate their performance and to take steps for the prevention, control and abatement of air and water pollution.

Plastic problem: finding a solution-Swapin

In our discussion with an NGO worker at Shanghumugham last Sunday, he warned us that our actions are creating more waste problems. It’s a reality, but some of us may wonder, how especially those who are not from a bio background
All these waste management concepts, dates back to around 5000 BC at the time of the first urban settlements in Indus valley civilization. But till the introduction of poly alkylated products or the so called plastics, it was running smoothly. During that pre plastic era, the waste produced was purely organic; that means, it would be decomposed by microbes, and returned to nature.
Later, in post plastic era, this natural cycle was disrupted. Not only was plastic non-biodegradable but it contained chemical contaminators and exhibited a non-porous (water proof, air tight, which cut the oxygen supply necessary for decomposing microbes) property that kills or inhibits the micro organisms necessary to act on organic waste, to decompose it.
Thus the use of non-biodegradable plastics, prevent decomposition of biodegradable waste too. Now in a desperate attempt, nature tries to decompose it through anaerobic decomposition, producing foul-smelling toxic cocktails of chemicals. This results in disrupting many vital cycles, like water, carbon and nitrogen cycle, which is so delicately balanced; threatening our very existence.
Now what we can do in this situation is a million rupee question. Our leaders, planners, scientists and of course, social organisations have tried many things. Before going into what we can do, we have to see what they have done, and, what are the waste management systems in place.
As we all know, we are in a democracy, so we are bound by laws. First of all, lets discuss what are the laws regarding waste management. At present we have 4 specific laws in this regard.

Adopting a technique for the entire museum campus that already exists for zoo maintenance

In the Trivandrum museum compound, there is a zoo. At the entry point of the zoo, there are security guards who check any one going inside the zoo with plastic, food and other items which maybe littered later ( after use ). They ask people to keep it in a locker, available near the premises, at a charge of Rs.2 per locker. Why don’t they adopt the same system for the entire museum compound except maybe the cafeteria.
Adopting this system would be better for the following reasons.
1) System can be implemented thoroughly.
2) Security guards need to make the necessary inquiries only once at entry point.
3) Also, a locker system will help to increase revenues.
4) Slowly, people will adopt this technique.

When the Dhaba owner tried

Two days after I talked to the Dhaba owner
download Heart and Souls dvd , I decided to go check on them. I went there in the afternoon. Surprisingly, the road side was cleared of all the trash. The plan is working, I thought. But to my dismay, there was no waste box…
I approached the owner and asked him why they have not put up a waste box. He replied that they did keep a waste box, a wooden carton, the same day. But somebody flicked it down during the scheduled evening power cut. “The locals in these areas are really uneducated, the only good thing about this place is the Technopark”, he said.
They used a tomato carton as the waste box. He said that they are ready to keep a new box every day as they buy atleast one carton a day.
They have kept a waste basket inside, to dispose the paper napkins they supply at the billing counter. But only very few deposit the used napkins inside the basket.
I told him about Tidycity and our activities and what we are aiming at.. I also told him about
our plan to put up a waste box with our label and message. He said that we could use our trash cans there, but pointed out that our box may also not survive the power cuts! I told him that we will think of what can be done and let him know.

Talking to a Dhaba about bringing bins

Location: Sharma Dhaba, a pretty famous North Indian food corner, situated on the Link Road opposite Technopark front gate. A place where Northies swarm in a lot. I stay in a hostel close to this place. I usually go there at night, with my friends. But today afternoon, after a good day’s sleep (doing night shift this month…), I went there for lunch. I wonder why I did not notice this the last so many times I went there. But the road outside the Dhaba was strewn with Chocobar covers and sticks. In front of the Dhaba, along the road, everywhere. I stood there for a minute weighing my options. Finally I made up my mind to go and talk to the owner after lunch.
I found him at the counter. As I am a regular there, he knew me. I had already paid the bill, so he knew it was something else that I was standing there for. He asked me what the matter was. I told him about the sorry state of the road and Dhaba premises. I asked him why they have not kept a waste basket for collecting the wastes. They used to have a cardboard box on the veranda he said, but since people seldom used it to drop their ice cream sticks and packets, they removed it.
I asked him if he could put another box there, this time with a sign requesting people to make use of that box. He replied positively. He agreed it was really bad that people litter the roads.
I did not get time in the evening to check if the box has been put up. I will do that tomorrow. If they havent, I was thinking if we could provide them with a waste box, with a sign and our TidyCity logo (link or whatever…) pasted. Maybe people will start using it if
they see that some organisation is behind that. And we might get more members too.

Museum clean up on Feb 1
As one of the first actions, a clean up of the Trivandrum Museum is planned for this Sunday, February 1st 09. The time is fixed at 4 p.m. and everyone is welcome to join us.
A 2-hour trash pick up, spanning as much of the museum as possible is what we have planned. We will be using the big packets that you get in black or white colours from spencer to dump the trash we collect. In addition, gloves would prove good when you pick up all sorts of rubbish from the grounds. A trash pick-up is what is planned but we could still consider bringing long brooms, which may prove necessary.
As of now there are just 5 or 6 of us who have volunteered to come. If there are more, we could split into small groups and divide the work.
This is just a start. There is no need to be let down by the amount of sharp criticism or discouragement thats bound to rise. One day of cleaning wont do anything. I am hoping this could be taken on a weekly basis until it forces people to stop and take notice and realize it falls on the head of every individual to make a difference. The idea is to not stop trying and do these little things that you could… that every one of us could.

If we could form committees like this for every area, say a street covering 100 houses or so, and work on a regular basis, it should make a huge difference. I mean people are likely to notice that something around them was different when they see clean streets every other day. These are the only ways we might hope for a change in attitude towards spitting and spoiling public areas. Once it drives in that the whole city was not exactly a huge garbage bin, people would automatically hesitate to continue on those lines. But then again we will need a lot of people to form committees.

What can a forum do?
Gather people. A wise friend had pointed out that a single person cannot clean a whole city up. 
So obviously the first step would be for all interested people to join together for some action.
I am thinking we will need direct meetings as soon as a forum is available so we can act immediately. I dont want the forum ending up to be a lot of talk with no action. But of course everyone could pour in ideas and discuss.
Anyone having more ideas please do suggest it!
