Museum clean up on Feb 1
As one of the first actions, a clean up of the Trivandrum Museum is planned for this Sunday, February 1st 09. The time is fixed at 4 p.m. and everyone is welcome to join us.
A 2-hour trash pick up, spanning as much of the museum as possible is what we have planned. We will be using the big packets that you get in black or white colours from spencer to dump the trash we collect. In addition, gloves would prove good when you pick up all sorts of rubbish from the grounds. A trash pick-up is what is planned but we could still consider bringing long brooms, which may prove necessary.
As of now there are just 5 or 6 of us who have volunteered to come. If there are more, we could split into small groups and divide the work.
This is just a start. There is no need to be let down by the amount of sharp criticism or discouragement thats bound to rise. One day of cleaning wont do anything. I am hoping this could be taken on a weekly basis until it forces people to stop and take notice and realize it falls on the head of every individual to make a difference. The idea is to not stop trying and do these little things that you could… that every one of us could.
Anyone who is interested to join us please leave a comment or send an email to mail@tidycity.org
Please let know your interest before 2 p.m. on Sunday.

First meet up, actions planned
We had a close to 2-hour meet up today. Only 5 could turn up. We met at an unidentifiable spot at the museum (unidentifiable because museum routes are always confusing).
Discussions were based on where we could start. We agreed that action was important. A list of some immediate things to do was drawn.
One of them is to do a weekly clean up drive. It had to be weekly since all of us could find an off only once a week. The coming Sunday, February 1st is the first day of action.
The action is as simple as this – 4 or 5 of us picking up trash and cleaning the museum as best as we could. The use? We realize doing this on one Sunday is not going to clean the entire city or the museum for that matter. But action in any little form is important. This is one of the simplest ways you could start. If someone is picking after you, you are likely to turn up and take notice.
Many people, I believe, don’t think about it when they throw out trash on the roads. So one of the first steps is to make them do that. If they see someone actually bothering to pick up the things they threw aside, its bound to make them think for a moment. Even when many of us are sick of the garbage we live with, none of us actually realize we are contributing to it as well.
That’s step 1. Although its bound to invite a lot of criticism, curious questions and laughs, I believe small things could make a big difference. Whatever an ordinary individual like me can do, can be done by anyone else – each single person could make a difference by doing so little – that’s the message we are trying to drive across.
Step 2 is getting photographs. The same blog can be used for that. Anyone who sees a picture that could convey a strong message, is welcome to contribute it to the blog. Photographs make a lot more impact than words can. Just click a picture with your cell phone and send it across.
Step 3 is talking to a few people who have had experience in this area. I will post more details about this once I have made some calls.
Step 4 is seeking Government’s help and that cant be done without. But the first deal would be to encourage people to use the system which is already in place.
A few more were talked about. But those that can make an immediate effect came down to this list. Anyone who is interested in joining any of these activities and be a part of the cause is entirely welcome
. Please just leave a comment.
Simply visualizing a clean city around you would be the biggest motivation you need. A clean city needn’t be defined as one that exists in other countries. We can bring it home.
Meet-up next week
Theres got to be some action coming. The blog will not do any good by itself. But then it could collect people. And thats the first step.
So next week we are planning to meet up in person. Currently there are 6 of us. Srijith, Vids, AJ, NR, Robee and me. Please leave a comment if anyone is genuinely interested to join the cause. It will work a whole lot better when there are people to support it and take it forward!

An article from The Hindu: -

If we could form committees like this for every area, say a street covering 100 houses or so, and work on a regular basis, it should make a huge difference. I mean people are likely to notice that something around them was different when they see clean streets every other day. These are the only ways we might hope for a change in attitude towards spitting and spoiling public areas. Once it drives in that the whole city was not exactly a huge garbage bin, people would automatically hesitate to continue on those lines. But then again we will need a lot of people to form committees.

A message conveyance in vain
To include one in lighter vein… I have been to a wedding reception today and they gave us all these small candies you see only at weddings now. Anyway, a couple of friends took the candies out and dropped the wrappers on the ground. I immediately picked it up although the ground was packed with all sorts of waste papers by then. I just wanted to convey that this should not be the practice, so they will remember next time not to drop things anywhere they feel like.
However, my message went unnoticed when the groom’s mother saw my gesture and thought I was having some kind of fancy for chocolate wrappers. She came running to me with a whole lot of wrappers and put it in my hands affectionately. My wrapper-dropper friends burst out in laughter as I stood there hands full of wrappers. The rest of the friends didn’t fail to open my hands and dump their wrappers too. Hmm. I hope, some day, one can work on a clean city initiative without actually serving as a trash can.

What can a forum do?
Gather people. A wise friend had pointed out that a single person cannot clean a whole city up.
So obviously the first step would be for all interested people to join together for some action.
I am thinking we will need direct meetings as soon as a forum is available so we can act immediately. I dont want the forum ending up to be a lot of talk with no action. But of course everyone could pour in ideas and discuss.
Anyone having more ideas please do suggest it!
Suggestions and actions so far
A few suggestions have been made by a few well-read acquaintances
-
Read and circulate Laurie Baker’s book on Garbage published by COSTFORD.
-
Create a forum and gather people
-
Talk to people
-
Plan meetings with the interested people
-
Take some simple measures to avoid wastes piling up like carrying cloth bags for shopping
-
Contact authorities
All these should happen in a matter of days, or it will be just another planned activity with no results coming out of it.
Actions taken so far
-
Laurie Baker’s book, have to see how the book can be obtained
-
Srijith, a friend, has volunteered to register a domain http://tidycity.org. So now the blog too is moved to the new domain – http://blog.tidycity.org. Another friend, Anoop John
said he could help with the forum which could be part of the same domain
-
Could happen when some people have joined together (forum) and then as a group activity
-
Same as -3-
-
Discussions on these topics could happen among the group, and then spread the ideas while talking to people

Daily calls and few emails to the corporation office has been unanswered after the first call. Will keep persisting of course.

There should not be any delay once there are enough people. I get crazy ideas like meet and start with the cleaning right away. When people see a bunch of guys and girls moving about cleaning garbage, that should possibly have some effect! The first day or two, it may be shunned off as a set of crazy people doing crazy things. But once you persist on it, its got to receive some response!

A phone call to the corporation office
About getting more trash bins in the city – I have been trying to make some phone calls and sending emails, none getting any response so far. But I didnt follow up on the calls. I was plain scared, to be honest.
And today I get a bit of free time after work. So I finally gathered enough guts and called up the corporation office. A friend had given this link -http://www.corporationoftrivandrum.in/grievance.htm
I had no idea whom to contact so I asked for the Corporation Engineer. He was not there and so the next designation I remembered was Council Secretary. I was feeling ice cold when I asked her how I can get more trash bins in the city. She asked “What?”. But she didnt yell at me. I asked again, this time adding “Who should I approach for this?” and she directed me to the Health Officer.
He didnt answer the phone yet. But I feel good enough to have taken the first step. I dont know if anything would come out of this but I have huge hopes. And there is no point in me telling do this, do that, when I am not ready to do so much as try to find out what could be done.
Will update on what happens after the next call. If anyone has a clear idea on whom to contact for this, please do let me know! Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit video Gummo buy

Telling kids what to do
In public places, kids who walk around licking their ice-sticks or chocolates have this habit of dropping the stick or chocolate-wrappers, as soon as they are done eating. Parents or guardians seem to make no note of this and ignore it entirely. And in worse cases take to doing it themselves, or telling the kids to drop it right there. In movie theaters, shoving plastic cups and wrappers under the seats are a common practice. If you come down to the canteens, there usually are big trash bins there to drop the waste.
But unfortunately all public places do not offer trash bins you could show kids. So until we have some sort of arrangements coming, we will have to revert to keeping all junk in person, in bags or brown papers till we get out and spot a bin.
Please take to telling your kids to not drop things as and where they feel like. If you start showing them the right practices at a young age, they are likely to follow those rules through life.thing the divx download Ruthless People rip
